I picked these juicy blackberries right here in Menorca, where I’ve lived for over 30 years. It’s a must every summer, and even though this one has been extremely hot, I still managed to catch a few before they dried up. While they were still fresh, I made a Ginger and Blackberry Compote and froze the rest for later to make this silky purple smoothie, extra refreshing, fruity, and cool.

And this is why you’re going to love it

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

Frozen blackberries

I picked and froze mine, which keeps them fresh. You can also use store-bought frozen or fresh blackberries.

Banana (ripe)

Adds creaminess and natural sweetness. Can swap for mango or pear if you don’t like bananas.

Soaked almonds (½ cup)

Soak for at least 30 minutes (up to 2 hours). Makes the smoothie smoother. Cashews also work well.

Oat milk (500ml / 2 cups)

Or any plant-based milk, such as almond, soy, or cashew, is fine.

FAQs

Is a smoothie the same as a milkshake?

Not really. Smoothies are usually made with fruit, nuts, and plant milk, so they’re lighter and more nourishing. Milkshakes often use ice cream and are more like a dessert. This blackberry almond smoothie feels creamy like a milkshake, but it’s made with wholesome ingredients.

Do I need to soak the almonds?

Yes, soaking softens the almonds, which makes the texture creamier. If you skip soaking, your smoothie might be slightly grainy.

Can I make this almond blackberry smoothie ahead of time?

You can store it in the fridge for up to 24 hours in a sealed jar, but it’s best freshly blended. The frozen blackberries give it that chilled, refreshing texture, which is nicest straight away.
